The origins of the Luo Shu grid 洛 书 (River Map) : in ancient times in China, a turtle came out from a river with a mysterious grid drawn on its shell.
The “Luo Shu” is a magic grid of nine squares: 3×3.
This square is magic because each horizontal vertical and diagonal sum of 3 numbers is always equal to 15.
15 is important in the 24 cycles of 15 days of the Chinese Solar calendar and also in the Lunar Calendar.
The Later Heaven Ba Gua is a principle that sets up many Feng Shui advanced Formulas. It is based on the Luo Shu grid.
Each number from 1 to 9 in the Luo Shu grid is associated with a trigram (a trigram is made of three horizontal lines continuous or discontinuous. There are Nine trigrams).
The Luo Shu grid is actually a diagram that ranks energies into different sectors at one time. The energies are called numbers (from 1 to 9) but they are also called Flying Stars or « Xuan Kong Fei Xing ».
Each number refers to one of the Five Elements :
1 is Water,
2, 5 and 8 are Earth,
3 and 4 are Wood,
6 and 7 are Metal,
9 is The Fire
Each number refers to every Eight Cardinal Directions :
Water is in the North,
Earth is in the Southwest, Central, and Northeast sectors
Wood is in the South-east and East
Metal is in the Northwest and West sectors,
Fire is South
Each number is associated with a trait of the Human Being :
1: Study
2: Disease, Stroke
3: Disputes, Conflict, Tension
4: Friendship and Romance
5: Misfortune
6: Power, Respect, Reputation
7: Thief
8: Prosperity
9: Promotion, evolution, celebrations
The Luo Shu square helps us to understand Feng Shui at home according to space and factors.
To find the right Lu Shu combination at home for the current period, always place first the right number in the central palace and other numbers in 8 other palaces will follow a special itinerary from square to square. Now we are in period 8 (2004-2024) so the number 8 shall be placed in the central palace.
Each sector of the Luo Shu Grid (North, South, East, West, Northwest, Northeast, Southeast, Southwest) receives each year, month, day, depending on the orientation of your house, different linked energies. These energies show how favorable or unfavorable the area is and how to cure it.
How to analyze the current energies inside a house :
Example: Period 8 (2004 – 2024), 2012, SOUTH 2/3 facing house :
We analyze the central palace :
8 means the Period.
6 is for the Year.
3 is the Mountain Star, it means luck for relationships.
2 is the Water Star, which means career or financial opportunities.
Each combination in each sector of your house is important to analyze the Feng Shui of the house.
Each number shall be analyzed according to its own characteristic or Element (Earth, Wood, Water, Fire, Metal). Then you shall find which Element it nurtures, exhausts or controls inside the same palace, according to the cycles of the Elements. This will indicate the lucky or unlucky nature of the numbers inside the area.
Example of malevolent combinations: 5 – 2/7 – 9 or 3 to 7 – 2/5 – 5 – 9
Example of beneficial combinations: 2 – 8/8 – 8 or 1 – 8 – 6/8 – 9 – 7
Numbers are also called “Flying Stars” or “Xuan Kong Fei Xing” .
